5 tips to beat hair breakage

If you feel like you’re in a constant battle with your hair breaking and ends splitting, you’re not alone. Split ends and breakage are a common issue, particularly for those who don’t get regular trims or those who frequently heat-style their hair. They can cause flyaways and frizz and lead to even further damage if not combated.

Luckily, you can take a few simple steps to prevent breakage and keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

Get regular trims

The easiest and most important thing you can do for your hair to avoid split ends is to make regular trips to the salon. “Regular” depends on your hair type and length, but we recommend about every six weeks.

The longer you go between trips to the salon, the further up the hair shaft a split end can move, meaning that your stylist will have to cut your hair shorter in order to get rid of the breakage.

Don't shampoo every day

Natural oils keep your strands strong and prevent your hair from drying out and breaking and shampooing too frequently strips that protection from your hair. When you do shampoo, we recommend using a shampoo that's packed full of moisture, like Sexy Hair Strengthening Anti-Breakage shampoo. For the days when you're not shampooing but want a clean feel, try a little dry shampoo on your roots where grease builds up.

Indulge your ends in leave-in conditioner

Seal in that moisture with leave-in conditioner! The right leave-in conditioner will add strength and elasticity to your hair, preventing split ends and locking in moisture. We recommend Sexy Hair Seal the Deal, a split end mender and leave-in conditioner combo.

Use a wide-tooth comb

Instead of brushing your hair after you shower, try gently combing through it with your fingers or with a wide-tooth comb while you’re still in the shower. This is much gentler and less harsh on your hair than brushing, which can cause breakage and damage.

Always use heat-protectant

This is a product you don’t want to skimp on if you do any heat-styling. Heat protection spray provides a force-field for your hair to protect it from flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers to reduce damage from the heat and keep moisture in your hair. Try our Solutions by Great Clips Thermal Protection Spray, which fights frizz, adds shine, and makes it easier to style.
